"Savior" by Iggy Azalea feat. Quavo - Single Review

Since the release of The New Classic, an album which spawned groundbreaking gems like "Fancy" and "Black Widow", Australian raptress Iggy Azalea has endured a number of career and personal blows. Thankfully, she continues to get back up.

Though previous stellar singles "Team", "Mo Bounce" and "Switch" were all criminally overlooked and failed to make a mainstream impact, the Digital Distortion album eventually scrapped, it hasn't affected Iggy's drive and perseverance. To kick off and promote a new, quickly-approaching Surviving the Summer era, the artist teams up with Quavo (questionable decision!) for the dancehall-inspired "Savior", an infectious bop that highlights her many strengths.

"Savior" still maintains a trademark hip-hop flare, even if Iggy mostly focuses on improved songwriting skills and Quavo is at his most harmonious. While the raptress has paved a successful path with an unapologetic attitude and tough exterior at the forefront, her new single finds her at a vulnerable moment in life. Influenced by a cheating scandal involving ex-fiance Nick Young, the artist sounds fragile, searching for a sign of love and purpose.

A sense of loneliness does overcome the release. The authentic and raw approach to the lyrical content might cause listeners to share in those unfortunate emotions. "I've been sending up prayers I need feedback, past full of sin can someone delete that, my path got muddy, I feel like my feet trapped, can you give me the strength now to beat that?," she desperately asks on the second verse, acknowledging that she's indeed lost her way.

Though her recent troubles in romance paradise and the inability thus far to mirror the success of her debut likely weigh heavy of Iggy's shoulders, "Savior" becomes her powerful battle cry of strength and self-betterment. The optimistic approach to solid songwriting, paired with a dominating radio-ready beat is refreshing and encouraging, as if the artist is brushing the dirt off and choosing to no longer play victim.

"It is not a record about you needing a man or a woman to come and save you in a relationship, it's about you being your own savior and finding your own strength within yourself to figure it the fuck out," Iggy says of the new lead single. "It's a really hard record for me to have written and I think it's going to be one I really struggle to perform, too, just 'cause I'll probably wanna cry every single time."

Call it a comeback, but Iggy never left. "Savior" simply represents a change in creative direction for an artist who is now in recovery mode. Quavo's inclusion is completely unnecessary, any male vocalist could have tackled the simplistic chorus. Thankfully, that's far from the highlight. Iggy's been desperately searching for a helping hand before realizing all she needs is herself. The single is an electrifying, emotionally-focused project that should put a deserving artist back on track.
