Iggy Azalea's "Black Widow feat. Rita Ora" - Song Review

Iggy Azalea has been under my radar for quite some time, although strangely has yet to pop up on this blog. That changes now. In preparation for the release of her long delayed debut album, The New Classic, this month, and following the success of singles "Bounce", "Work" and "Fancy", the Australian-born raptress is teaming up with UK darling Rita Ora for the insanely thrilling "Black Widow", a trap-inspired, EDM-influenced "love" song featuring a co-writing credit from the one and only Katy Perry.

The Perry credit comes as no surprise as the new track does sound strangely similar to the artist's latest number one hit "Dark Horse". However, thanks to Azalea's hard-hitting verses of a man who will be begging for her touch in the end, "Black Widow" carries a stronger punch that sounds to have immense crossover potential if ever released as an official radio single.

Ora, who has not received much positive reception from this blogger, allows the subtle pop essence of the track shine. As the momentum of the song continuously builds up to the chorus, the UK songstress does not disappoint. "I'm gonna love you until you hate me, and I'm gonna show you what's really crazy," Ora sings before the hypnotic snyth production creates a dark and eerie vibe which sets the tone for the entire effort. The two ladies showcase musical chemistry as they give it to the lovers who have done them wrong.

"Black Widow" carries enough influences from a few popular genres, and one killer hook, to find a possible niche and audience to become a bigger hit for Azalea then her current Top 40 hit, "Fancy". The rap star is not shy about getting in someone's face, while Ora's contribution comes off as someone who is finally standing up for themselves. The New Classic has hit many delays, but with songs like this one, maybe the wait was worth it.
