Is it too late now to say sorry?' Justin Bieber was slammed by viewers of the Billboard Music Awards on Twitter on Sunday after he was accused of lip syncing his way through his hits
Several of the tweets compared his performance to Britney - who has been known to favour lip syncing at times
And the comparisons didn't end there, another wrote: 'Sorry, @justinbieber, you are not Britney. You have not earned the right to lipsync an entire award show performance.'
A third also said: 'Billboard Music Awards or new episode of Lip Sync Battle with Britney Spears and Justin Bieber?'
But not everyone was criticising Justin's performance - and many of his Beliebers spoke out to defend his appearance at the prestigious awards.
One wrote: 'amazing vocals from Justin Bieber #isupportjustin.'
They're not holding back: Twitter was awash with comments from people accusing the singer of lip syncing
In higher spirits: Justin appeared to be in a good mood as he arrived at Palm Restaurant on Monday
Another followed with, 'Justin's visuals are always so amazing.' while a third wrote: '@justinbieber is amazing...for me he is the greatest person to look up to, rising from his fall.'
The criticism comes after Justin criticised the show himself, calling them 'hollow' and some of the attendees 'fake.'
Posting a picture of a crumbling Irish church - which is part of the the Rock of Cashel Castle - with sheep serenely nibbling on grass around it, the Purpose star bared his soul, once again, to his fans.
Justin, who won two awards and performed at the Las Vegas show, said he meant no disrespect but he '[doesn't] know about these award shows'.
They're fans: Some people were loving Bieber's most recent offering and supported the star
'Ffake smiles' Justin Bieber took to Instagram Monday to express his dislike of award shows after attending the Billboard Music Awards the night before
'Nothing but love for you guys and your support. But I don't feel good when I'm there nor after. I try to think of it as a celebration but can't help feeling like people are rating and grading my performance.'
The hitmaker said it was those in the audience that him feel uncomfortable and seemed to be there for the wrong reasons.
'A lot of people in the audience ... seem worried about how much camera time they will get or who they can network with.
Who's Sorry now! Justin gave a bit of a lackluster performance as he sang his hits Company and Sorry with the help of a backing track and bright laser beams at the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday
'When I'm doing a regular show I feel they are there for the right reasons and to strictly have a good time! But these award shows seem so hollow.
'I get the premise is to award people for their accomplishments, but is it really? Because when I look in the audience I see a bunch of fake smiles so that when the camera hits them they look happy.'
Justin enlisted the help of a backing track and bright laser beams for his talked about performance .
He walked from side to side, performing a few dance moves but didn't match the energy of his backup dancers.
Bieber was a double winner, including a win for top male artist, beating The Weeknd, Drake, Ed Sheeran and Fetty Wap.
All the right moves: The 22-year-old performed two songs from his latest album Purpose; he sang Company before finishing off with his hit single Sorry
Hitting all of the right notes: The pop star, who was awarded the Top Male Artist trophy, brought the crowd to their feet with his dazzling performance
'I'm not really a talker, but I'll say thank you to my family. I want to thank God. I want to thank everyone that believed in me and believes in me,' Bieber said.
The singer, who also won the Top Social Media Artist award, began his performance belting out Company while on the stage with a colorful galaxy-esque light show shielding his face.
The lights transformed into a linear and circular pattern in sync with the beat while his face and body were still hidden behind shadows.
Following a red light show, his dancers appeared and Justin came into full view.
One-and-a-half-minutes into his performance, Justin demonstrated his skilled dance moves.
