10 INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT MARILYN MONROE’S CAREER

10 Interesting Facts About Marilyn Monroe’s Career

“If you don’t love me at my worst, you don’t deserve me at my best.”

  – Marilyn Monroe

How many times have you quoted Marilyn? We’ve all done it. She’s so quotable.

She’s also a movie icon, a glamour icon – she’s a queen that many women around the world look up to!

But how much do you really know about the original blonde bombshell who took Hollywood by storm, and who married a playwright and a baseball star?

In this article, we take a closer look at one of the true starlets of Hollywood’s Golden Era with 10 interesting facts about Marilyn Monroe’s career.

Marilyn Monroe Never Won an Oscar

10 INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT MARILYN MONROE’S CAREER

Marilyn Monroe died at the tender age of 36, having starred in over 30 movies, including Bus Stop and How To Marry a Millionaire. And while it might come as a surprise to many that Monroe never picked up an Oscar, there were a few things counting against her.

Despite her obvious talent, Marilyn died young. Who knows whether or not she would have gone on to enjoy a glittering, award-winning career?

She was also said to be disappointed with her public image that had been been orchestrated by her management team, and she also felt that she’d been typecast. This sort of thing wouldn’t have helped her pursuit of an Academy Award.

And while she starred in box office smash hits such as The Seven Year Itch and Some Like It Hot, Ms Monroe never actually won an Oscar herself.

She Should Have Starred In Breakfast at Tiffany’s

Everyone knows Breakfast at Tiffany’s for being Audrey Hepburn’s film. She’s the beautiful star who’s legend was made by this movie.

However, writer of the original source material Truman Capote had someone else in mind for the role first: Marilyn Monroe. It’s definitely one of interesting facts about Marilyn Monroe’s career.

In fact, Monroe was close to landing the role. She actually performed two scenes for the writer, who said she was “terrifically good.”

The reason she didn’t take on the role was because her acting coach and advisor warned her that she probably shouldn’t be playing that type of character.

Not only did Marilyn miss out – so did Capote, who said: “Paramount double-crossed me in every way and cast Audrey Hepburn.”

Marilyn Monroe Loved Intellectual Men

10 INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT MARILYN MONROE’S CAREER

Marilyn Monroe was eleven years younger than playwright Arthur Miller when they married in 1956. In todays modern world, the idea of a blonde bombshell marrying a playwright would certainly raise a few eyebrows!

It did back then too, but Monroe always had a thing for older, intellectual men.

This is borne out by the testimony of her friend, actress Shelley Winters, who said they put together a list of men they wanted to sleep with.

On Marilyn’s list, all the men were over 50.

And one of them was Albert Einstein.

So while an image has been created of Marilyn Monroe being a “dumb blonde,” there was clearly much more to her than that.

She Also Loved To Read

It makes sense that, if Marilyn had such a big thing for intellectual men, she liked to read herself. And she did.

In fact, Monroe was incredibly well-read, and was said to own over 400 volumes. She also owned lots of first editions and enjoyed being photographed while reading a book.

Marilyn’s First Marriage Was Arranged

It’s customary in some religions for a marriage to be arranged.

But can you believe Marilyn Monroe’s first marriage was arranged?

Marilyn had only just turned sixteen when she married her first husband, James Dougherty. He was actually her next-door-neighbour, he was aged twenty – and she barely knew him.

So how come they got married? And why did they marry when she was so young?

Marilyn had to get married, otherwise she would have been sent back to an orphanage.

James himself wasn’t sure, saying “I thought she was awful young. But we talked and we got on pretty good.”

Isn’t love wonderful?

It Took Marilyn a Long Time To Remember Her Lines

This is another one of interesting facts about Marilyn Monroe’s career. She was a great actress once she got going – but it sometimes took her a while to get going!

Incredibly shy when the camera was turned on, Marilyn became a bag of nerves who simply couldn’t remember her lines.

Some put this down to a lack of professionalism, saying she hadn’t even bothered to learn her lines. Others knew that she felt deeply anxious when in front of a camera.

At the same time, it wouldn’t be too hard to believe the lack of professionalism argument as she was constantly late for work. Moreover, she was fired from her last ever movie.

She Wasn’t Born Marilyn Monroe

If you’re at all interested in Marilyn Monroe, you’ll already know that her birth name was Norma Jean. But do you know how she came to be Marilyn Monroe?

Her first name was chosen by the head of new talent at Fox Studios, Ben Lyon, who told her that she’s a basically a Marilyn (he knew another Marilyn who she reminded him of).

Monroe, meanwhile, was her grandma’s last name. When she put the two together, it sound amazing.

Marilyn Monroe Had Plastic Surgery

10 INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT MARILYN MONROE’S CAREER

This is another one of interesting facts about Marilyn Monroe’s career. Although she died aged just 36, Marilyn had already had plastic surgery.

In 1950, she had a nose job carried out.

Cute.

Marilyn Was Deeply Troubled and Attempted Suicide Multiple Times

Away from the camera, the blonde bombshell was a troubled young woman who committed suicide on more than one occasion.

Indeed, her husband Arthur Miller was said to have saved her three times!

Before then, she had already attempted suicide in 1950 after her agent and lover Johnny Hyde died.

Marilyn Wanted To Be Seen as a Serious Actor

Even today, not everyone will see Marilyn Monroe as a serious actor. When they hear her name, they automatically think of her status as a sexy symbol and a dizzy blonde.

Moreover, she wasn’t exactly in many serious films.

Yet all the while, Marilyn worked hard to perfect her craft and wanted to be taken more seriously as an actress. Who knows what might have become of her had she lived longer?
