Bette Midler's "Waterfalls" - Song Review

Stop what you are doing! Bette Midler, known to the current generation as one of the Hocus Pocus trio, is also a Grammy Award winning vocalist who is readying a new covers album of iconic tracks from girl groups of the past. It's the Girls!, set for release next month, will most definitely highlight Midler's heavenly vocals and the newly-released "Waterfalls" is evidence of one's opinion.

Originally recorded and released in the 90s by the chart-topping TLC, Midler turns the R&B/hip-hop ballad into a somber slow number, emphasizing the heartache that comes out of the song's story-like lyrics. Supported by simple piano and strings, the legendary vocalist is able to make every single word carry some sort of emotion. "Don't go chasing waterfalls, please stick to the rivers and lakes that you're used to," she belts.

It may be a risky decision to record a cover, especially a song that spent seven weeks in the number one position on the Billboard Hot 100, however, Midler puts her original and breath-taking spin that would make even the most die-hard TLC fan cry tears of joy and sorrow. It truly is a beautifully haunting version, a perfect way to kick off the upcoming album.

"Waterfalls" was an already amazing song, but leave it to a professional like Bette Midler to reintroduce use to its magic. Thanks to the stripped back vocal performance, light, gorgeous instrumentals and perfect execution, this version allows us to forgive Midler for not taking a crack at the late Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes' iconic rap verse of the original. Either way, the Golden Globe winner hit this one out of the park.
