What is Black Friday?
It is traditionally, the start of the gift buying season for Christmas for companies.
It is also a day of insane sales and shopping where brands lower their prices dramatically to compete for sales. It is traditionally an American day but now UK brands are taking part. Although, this is the first year that the focus has been more online rather then in store and spread out over the week running up to the Friday.
In the past, BF has been difficult with scrums, fights and crowds causing difficulties in stores.
This is the first year since the introduction to the UK (from Amazon) five years ago, that there has been backlash. Retailers are complaining that the introduction of sales during the slow period has meant customers are reluctant to pay full price. This is a period where there should be a massive spike in profit too due to Christmas shopping but discounting means consumers are being careful. Also brands are opting to not take part with Primark and Asda not taking part this year. John Lewis also reported the pressure of having to take part to compete with other brands.
The predicted spending is £1.07bn from all the days of sales combined.
Visa predicts that online spending alone will bring in £1.9bn. Ebay are expecting 9 million people to log in during the 24 hr period. Carphone warehouse also reported increasing stock by 40% to cope with demand.
