“It’s just the beginning, let me tell you. Michele has so many good ideas. There are more good things to come,” he told WWD at the Los Angeles County Museum of Arts’ sixth annual Art and Film gala this weekend, crediting the creative director with reversing the fortunes of the storied house. “Gucci is doing a great turnaround. Let’s put it this way: when Alessandro arrived a year-and-a-half ago, he completely transformed the brand and the world of Gucci.”
As well as praising the aesthetic of Michele's world - which, he said, doesn't mimic anything - Pinault explained the role that he plays in picking the world's top fashion talent to fill to coveted creative and artistic director positions at labels within the Kering Group - Demna Gvasalia at Balenciaga, Anthony Vaccarello at Saint Laurent and Tomas Maier at Bottega Venetaments among them.
"They have talent, all of them," he said. "What is difficult is to match their talent with the right brand. My responsibility is to make sure that those amazing personalities make sense together, the brand and the designer. When you have the perfect fit like Gucci and Alessandro, it’s a firework.”
