Bonnie McKee & !llmind's "Speed Of Light" - Single Review

After releasing her impressive debut Bombastic EP back in June ("I Want It All" and "Wasted Youth" are definite must hears), go-to pop songwriter Bonnie McKee has partnered with producer !llmind and information technology company Hewlett Packard for the Star Wars: The Force Awakens-inspired ballad "Speed Of Light". The new track finds McKee in her comfort zone, supported by alluring beats and a hard-hitting, euphoric hook.

Over sound effects from lightsabers and famous robotic companions, McKee sings of dancing with the darkside of her heart, giving inspirational messages of strength and following one's unique path along the way. The bouncy, captivating production is the perfect backdrop for the artist's emotive and sincere vocal performance, an aspect that allows "Speed Of Light" to become something more than the generic Katy Perry leftover.

While there are noticeable Star Wars references thrown in for promotion purposes, the mid-tempo ballad does not rest solely on its connection with the successful film franchise. Instead, McKee has let the film inspire a radio-ready song detailing the search for a distant, cosmic love. "I'm ready to go, I'm ready to fly, I can feel the force waking up inside, it's stronger than before, now it's do or die," she belts on the track's enticing hook, right before she lets her vocal reigns go on the chorus.

"Speed Of Light" may have come to fruition because of an upcoming movie premiere tie-in, however, the track stands strong on its own, just like many McKee creations do. The song could have easily been promoted as the new lead single for McKee's long awaited second studio album, and would have likely found success on the pop radio airwaves. The new effort highlights the artist's ability to vocally carry a tune with her delicate yet convincing delivery. It also further cements her as one of the brightest writers in the genre.

If the track had one small downfall, it would be its short time length, barely pushing past the three-minute mark,. That just shows the intergalactic power of "Speed Of Light". After one full listen, you will be compelled to have the ballad on repeat for the rest of your lifetime. McKee has not lost her touch at creating an earworm that will stay lodged in one's mind. However, it's pleasant and honest enough where one won't really care if they've played it 75 times straight.
